A History of the Office of the Lord Mayor of London The office of the Lord Mayor of London was instituted in 1189. Each Lord Mayor is elected for a 1 year term and, by custom, does not usually serve more than once although there have been a number of Lord Mayors that have served more than one term. The election is held on Michaelmas Day (29 September) or the nearest weekday. Representatives of the City's Livery Companies hold a public vote by show of hands to elect one of the current Aldermen, although a ballot may be held if one of the liveryman so demands. The Lord Mayor is then sworn in during November in a "silent ceremony", the day before the Lord Mayor's Show. A seal, purse, sword and mace are transferred to the incoming Lord Mayor at this time. A List of Lord Mayors The following are alphabetical listings of Lord Mayors of London between 1189 -2002. I have no information about any of these Lord Mayors except Sir Hugh Hammersley. However, if you would like to share information about any of the Lord Mayors please email me.
